Care Guide

Basics for success

Humidity

  • Small Seedlings: Require 90-100% humidity (prop box/dome).
  • Larger Plants: Thrive in 70-90% humidity (cabinet/tent).
  • Acclimation: Best in Spring/Summer. Wait for a cataphyll to emerge. Leaf drop is normal; new growth will adapt.

Watering

  • Never let substrate dry completely. Water when it begins to dry.
  • Ensure drainage so seedlings don't sit in stagnant water.
  • Frequency: Infrequently in high humidity; up to 2x/week in lower humidity/high light.

Light

  • Goal: Bright, Indirect Light (Natural is best).
  • Seedlings: ~200 FC (Foot-candles).
  • Larger Anthuriums: 300-500 FC.
  • Duration: 12 hours/day. Measure with a light meter or the Photone app.

Fertilizer

  • Start full-strength after first leaf hardens.
  • Ensure Cal-Mag (or a fertilizer with Calcium & Magnesium) is present in your mix.
  • Favorites: Superthrive Foliage Pro (2-4x dose) OR Maxsea 16-16-16 + CalMag.

Substrate & Flushing

  • Plants usually arrive in moss or peat (fine for growing).
  • Repotting: Use airier mix (tree fern, pumice) if you use a reservoir or tend to overwater.
  • Large Pots: Aroid mix (perlite, lava rock, coco chips, charcoal).
  • Ambient Growing: Promix HP or well-draining peat.
  • Flushing: Run filtered water through the pot every 2-3 months until clear to remove salt buildup.
